The Anatomy of an Etsy Listing
The art of a perfectly set up Etsy SEO strategy starts within your listing. Take a moment to closely examine the 20 elements that may affect your Etsy search ranking one by one using the graphic below:
Etsy SEO - Ranking high in the etsy search results
1. Your listing title
The titles you give your listings is one of the most crucial parts of getting Etsy SEO right. Common sense tells us that when we want to rank for certain keywords in the search engine, we need to mention these keywords in the title. Without these keywords, Etsy would have no clue as to what our listing was about and how to rank it. The key here, though, is not how many times this word appears in your title, but rather the order of importance.
Here’s a very important thing to remember: the first word in your listing title will weigh the heaviest and will have the biggest chance of ranking in the search results.
In order to rank high in the search results and get views on your listing, this keyword needs to be highly relevant and very specific.
For example: you’re selling Moroccan inspired golden earrings. When writing your listing title, start the very first word with a keyword that specifically describes your item. In this case it could be ‘Moroccan golden earrings’. After this, you could add more words describing the item (again in order of importance) such as ‘X karat gold’, ‘handmade jewelry’ and other unique words that 1) describe your item and 2) could be a keyword a buyer is searching for.
Our title would look something like this:
Moroccan golden earrings – 18 Karat Golden Handmade Earrings, arabesque shape / quatrefoil pattern, for birthday and wedding, gold jewelry
Your Etsy listing title has a maximum of 140 characters, and you should use them wisely. This is why for one, you shouldn’t repeat keywords. For your ranking, it doesn’t matter if a word appears one, two, or three times in your listing title. What does matter is the position you put it and which word is at the very beginning of your listing. Also make sure to have your title sound like a natural sentence. It should be easy for buyers to read about your listing without having to skim through a long list of keywords.
2. The “alt tag”
When optimizing your rankings in Etsy’s internal search engine, it doesn’t hurt to keep your Google rankings in mind as well. Etsy already does a great job to ensure that whatever SEO strategies you use for ranking on their website, will be relevant and applicable to Google’s search engine algorithm as well. Your listing title as described above, for example, functions as an “alt tag” for your product images. An alt tag, in short, is a technical feature that tells a computer what a picture is representing, and Google’s little ‘robot crawlers’ pay attention to these alt tags. This means that whatever you write down as your Listing title, will be representing your image for these robots, and therefore affect your Google ranking. You don’t have to sweat over this and do anything special for these tags, but it is an extra motivation for keeping your listing titles highly relevant and sorted in order of importance.
